Citiy of Aeroeskoebing
Aeroeskoebing – The historic center of Aeroe island
The town of Ærøskøbing represents the historic center of the island, with narrow lanes and cinematic houses with cobble stoned streets. It came to be known as a skippers town in the 17th century, was also called “a Lilliputian souvenir of the past”. Ærøskøbing’s houses and streets are in meticulous shape, restored to retain the character of the olden days which reach back to 1645. Ærøskøbing was awarded the Europa Nostra prize in 2002 as a special appreciation of looking after cultural heritage.
Throughout Ærøskøbing you will find examples of the work of skilled bricklayers, artistic carpenters and iron works by talented blacksmiths. Behind the idyllic and seemingly quiet facade of the town is a very alive and active community.
Aeroeskoebing is a very popular landing spot in the european sailing and skippers community who cruise traditionally the european islands. Aeroe is heavily visited during summer and travel seasons. The beautiful Church at the market square is accompanied by two old cast-iron water pumps that supplied the town with water right until 1952.
The old harbor has been upgraded by a new marina with a close by beach (Vesterstrand) with its colorful little beach huts, only a few minutes walk from the town and the harbor.
Ærøskøbing is a town that you once visited will never forget!
