Aeroe's First Ever International Mask-Festival (June 18-21, 2009)

Aeroe is one of the few place left in Denmark that has a living mask tradition. The people of Aeroe celebrate the "Twelfth Night or Shrovetide", walking from house to house wearing masks. That's why Aeroe is the perfect and natural place for the first ever international mask festival in Denmark. There will be a mixed variety of mask traditions-world wide including performances, workshops, exhibitions and a scientific gathering. People are coming from the USA, Italy and many other european countries.

The opening of the festival will take place in the city of Soeby. Here you will initially see 3 artists from the US called "Gateway Productions" with their show "Illusions". There will be parades through the streets of Aeroeskoebing with many other entertainers.

Special Events:
• We will receive 2 danish theater groups from "Theater Om, Ringkoebing" and the "Thalias Diener, Aarhus" with shows for children
• From Italy we will receive "Teatro due Mindi" with a special show in the streets of Marstal.
• In Aeroeskoebing you can see "Masque Teatre" with a show called "Blues Blues".

Parallel to this event you could visit the castle called SOEBYGAARD. The will be an exhibition of the history of "Aeroemasken" and needless to say a large collection of masks.

There will be several other exhibitions going on at the same time - as listed below:
• Bregninge Church: A presentation of masks at midnight!
• "TSAM  MASKEN" - Masks from Mongolia!
• Sunday: The festival will close with a presentation in Soeby where you can learn about the irish tradition of mask-making. There will also be participants from the "Atlantis Mask Theater" and the danish orchestra will close the festival with a massive concert in Marstal!

Ærøskøbing Fairytaleparty Days (July 16-19):

You will not need Google-maps nor GPS to find this one - this event will happen In Aeroeskoebing, next to the church! There will be a huge tent with live-music, lots of food (BBQ), beer of course and much more. Just come by and check it out!

Classical Music and Concerts:

Classical concerts – Over six Wednesdays from 22 July to 26 of August, the very best performers of Danish and foreign chamber music will visit the island with peaces by the masters of classical music.

Art at the harbour of Ærøskøbing. (Kunst på havnen) July 1-24

The night watchman of Æroeskoebing:
A local, informative and entertaining tourguide through Aeroeskoebing. He will be dressed as a night watchman from the old fairytale-days, like the night watchman who took care of the city. He walk up the streets of Ærøskøbing and will tell about the history of some buildings, about the architecture and many other things you did not know!

NEW Arrebo (pub) in Æroeskoebing opens May 1st.
Its good news for Ærøskøbing. After the last owner has sold after 18 years and opened restaurant Addis in Vestergade, people were really missing a pub in the city. It has been a meeting point for many. Since May 1st the old pub Arrebo has opened again and is now owned by "Lene and Ole".

Opening hours: 11-2 pm. From June it will be open every day.
Location: 150 M from the harbour in Ærøskøbing; on Vestergade on the right hand side.

Sailing, ships and sail-tours:

Sail around the island on and old ship from 1922 called "Fylla", which is located in Aeroeskoebing harbor. Visit Fylla's danish language website to find out more here

You could also charter different ships, there are many available. Most of the ships are over 100 years old and restored by their owners. There are some unbelievable beautiful european ships.
