The manor Søbygaard was built by Duke Hans the Younger around 1580 who was a duke do without a hunting lodge. In Søbygaard we find a bit of Ærø’s tumultuous history through many different princes who from time to time also divided the island between them.
There is a famous well-meaning ghost in and around this castle that many people have actually seen, she is called the “white lady”.
The Soebygaard Museum buildings on this property and the concert hall is decorated with works by Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen. Next to Søbygaard you can walk to the preserved castles from the Middle Ages and enjoy a beautiful panorama view up to the island’s north end and over the belt to Als and Funen. Søbygaard hosts various exhibitions of art and cultural history world, and exciting place where you can see many events.
